According to the World Food Programme, 59% of people live in poverty, with 23% of people living in extreme poverty. Guatemala has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world. This correlates with poor hygiene, low education levels, and lack of healthcare. 42% of Guatemalans have no access to clean water, 45% of the population over the age of 15 is illiterate, and most lack basic hygiene knowledge aiding to ailments that are treatable in the developed world.
